Nature and Heritage

Description

Landscape photography is difficult to define. For me, landscape photography is not so much about what is contained in the image, but what it says about a place. While a landscape photograph might be an expansive image of a pristine lake or a forest at sunset, it might just as well be a tiny plant detail reflecting the infinite complexity of nature.

If the lake, the forest sunset and the plant detail each reveal something significant about a place, its inhabitants, or its conditions and evoke a particular emotional response in the viewer, then if I feel they work well as landscape photographs. Grand or tiny, a landscape is not so much about the subject itself, but rather about the place in which the subject exists and the feeling the subject and place evokes.

approach

A photographers approach to landscape photography and indeed photography in general says something about their philosophical approach to life and their perspective of the world.  In photography it is possible to see infinite perspectives of the same scene, to be drawn to different aspects, wide panoramas and tiny details.  I hope that my immense love of the nature and scenery of Ireland is communicated through my particular perspective.  My work on the Galway Golden Mile Project illustrates my ability to tease the detail from the landscape while also capturing the magnificence of scene itself.

GOlden mile of galway

For the last three years, I have undertaken photography work for a partnership of a number of statutory and community agents including galway county council and Galway rural development in relation to the golden mile of Galway competition. the competitiion showcases miles ofgalway's rural roads and is a celebration of the simple, unspoilt elements of our natural and built heritage. my work on this project involved capturing this beauty in photographic form and i was also involved in designing the galway golden mile calendar now in its fourth year. a pdf of the calendar can be found here golden mile calendar 2007
